The winner in the interior design category was for the Project in Granada “Casa Isabel la Católica” by GRX architects

The finalist projects in both categories include a wide variety of typologies and uses of ceramics: urban, façade, refurbishment, public equipment...

Last week, the jury of the 22nd Tile of Spain Awards of Architecture and Interior Design met at ASCER's head office. The panel, presided over by the renowned architect Carme Pinós, was made up of the following members: the architect Jesús Olivares (COR Asociados Architects), the designer Inma Bermúdez, the director of Diariodesign, Gracia Cardona and the architect and president of the Castellón Architects' Association, Susana Babiloni.

The Awards have a monetary prize of €15,000 for each of the first prizes in the architecture and interior design categories.

The Tile of Spain Awards are sponsored by Endesa and the Valencia Port Authority and are supported by the Conselleria de Hacienda of the Valencian Government.

The purpose of the Tile of Spain Awards is to raise a greater awareness of the use of Spanish tiles in architectural and interior design projects (both in Spain and abroad).  The Tile of Spain Awards are a well-established event with a prestigious reputation among professionals from the world of architecture.

The 22nd Tile of Spain Awards

Architecture:

The jury reached a unanimous decision the first prize to the project “Casa en Puntiró (Mallorca)” by Ripoll-Tizón architects’ studio.

They considered it to be a very well-integrated project, with a coherent blend of chosen materials and architectural formulae. Well-balanced attention was paid to materiality, structural aspects, and architectural solutions, clearly approached in a simultaneous way right from the beginning. The jury highlighted the architects' skilled choice of materials and the project’s finer architectural points.

Interior design:

The first prize went to the project "Isabel la Católica House. Drawing José María García de Paredes" by Agustín Gor Gómez (GRX Arquitectos).

In this project, the jury highlighted the use of a timeless, standard 10x10cm tile throughout the home, adapted to fit in with its plasticity.  Movement is generated with just one tile model, and it is sufficiently versatile to clad all kinds of surfaces, even curved ones.  The jury also praised the skilful choice of colours used throughout the project.

In the interior design category, the jury decided to award a special mention to "Cloud House" by Studio Animal.

The jury applauded the solution to the typical problem of how to refurbish a highly compartmentalized small or medium-sized home: placing all the communal areas on one side and the private ones on the other, with a buffer area between them rather like a cloud, differentiated formally and in material terms.   This contains all the home's wet areas and it also acts as a filter between the private and communal areas.

Finalist projects - Architecture:

“Alterations and extensions to Buenavista Cultural Centre” by Padilla Nicás Arquitectos + Mariluz Sánchez. Edificio en frente de una casa

“María Zambrano Infant School” by Magén Arquitectos.

“Conversion of an abandoned building into 27 flats" by NUA arquitectures (Arnau Tiñena Ramos, Ferrán Tiñena Guiamet, María Rius Ruiz)

Finalist projects – Interior Design:

“Cabanyal House” by Viruta Lab.

“Urban Cabinet Series (2): The Expanded Columns” by Beatriz Arroyo and Lys Villalba.
